2017-2024 Summary reports

1871 Chapel Building

  • Built by Clarendon Baptists in 1871, on a 30’x45’ lot (ref. 1980 Annual report).
The building is significant for its vernacular style and landmark for the village of North Clarendon.

It displays rounded colored glass windows, a steeple and an open shingled belfry with a polygonal spire.
The Town of Clarendon at that time was more significant in population than Rutland but much of the history has disappeared. The town had many districts and each one had a school. The 1869 map of Clarendon indicated there were 9 schools at that time, 1 for each district. That time frame corresponds nicely with the construction of the North Clarendon Chapel. In that timeframe, we find the Brick Church (1824), the Queen Anne East Clarendon Chapel and the Chippenhook Meetinghouse built in 1798  that burned in 1971.) The town has very few buildings remaining of that period. The Chapel was at the old core of North Clarendon Village where one would have found a Tavern, a Tea House and Inn.

We have raised $6000 so far. We would like to make an appeal to the community and business owners for the second half.  Any support will offer recognition.

Thanks to a generous donation, the new standing seems roof in the back was added and the slate roof was repaired.

Will the intact Bell of  Chapel 1871 in North Clarendon ring once more in years to come?

Neighbors and residents of Clarendon-rich with early settler’s history, have set their mind to restore the old chapel to bring back their village.

Clayton Rockwell, fire warden has volunteered to paint the southern end, Jim Theodore of ITT Properties offered to do split rails, Bronson Spencer a survey. Jackson Evans, a window restoration expert has offered to assist with various aspect of the stain glass windows which is a crucial component of this restoration. Devin Colman, Architecturial Historian, who has worked on several projects such as the Kingsley Bridge and the  has declared the Chapel National Registry eligible.

So, what is there to lose? Increase cyclists touring the rural roads of our beautiful region? Attract new residents who will enjoy, protect and invest in this untouched Vermont dominion and enclave? “Bringing back the history of the area would enhance its uniqueness (singleness), bring pride for residents for its yesteryears that is filled with wonders that started 10’000 years ago when the last glacier receded and Native American moved in. Give an incentive to everyone to better their town, gardens and homes…” says: Nicolette Asselin Board member and grant writer for the project.

North Clarendon

Clarendon is a unique rural town with much of the oldest history for the county. Except for Town Hall, the Red Brick Church, the Grange, some buildings have been neglected and will slowly disappear unless some efforts are made to maintain them. We are currently working on the Chapel. Read

In the past, North Clarendon offered most of the commercial activities: A post office, a Grange, school, chapel, Inn, tea house. With grants and private support, it could bring back a modest yet interesting historic village district for the Town Clarendon.

Efforts that would be beneficial:

  • Village Designation
    • Village Designation offer tax credits and many incentives. Read
  • National Recognition
    • Obtaining the National Historical Registry for the North Clarendon Chapel (Chapel 1871) will pave the way to more community efforts.
